Residents gathered at the Nov. 8 Millet Town Council meeting for a public hearing on the proposed rezoning of the most northernly 30 meters of a property at 5201 45 Ave. The rezoning would change the property to the C3 commercial zoning, and change it from a medium density residential area to a high density area.

“There was a general consensus among attendees that’s it’s important to protect the creek and make sure development was not impacting that,” said Lisa Novotny, Millet’s director of development and infrastructure. “Environmental factors and accesses were a priority when the town was looking at the development.”

Novotny said the C3 designation is being considered because “The municipal development plan for the town outlines a goal and vision for community going forward, and part of that includes growth and how that will be managed. We are trying to include a wide variety of housing types to serve the community and take advantage of highway exposure.”

Novotny said C3 is a new designation for Millet, and requires that the property be along a provincial highway.

Commercial uses under the C3 designation could include a multi-tenant commercial building, a single-tenant commercial building, a convenience store, essential utility services, personal service business or professional, financial and office support services.

“We want to ensure that development is done e in a vary conscientious way and make sure environment is protected, as is the safety of our community,” Novotny said.

The second and third readings of the bylaw are scheduled for the Nov. 22 council meeting.
